Interventional Radiology (IR) is a subspecialty that utilizes various types of imaging (ultrasound, CT, or x-ray fluoroscopy) to guide needles or small catheters into vessels, solid organs or other structures to make a diagnosis or to potentially offer treatment of certain disease processes.

Angiography and Vascular Intervention
Angiography and Vascular Intervention may include but is not limited to dissolving or removing blood clots in the deep leg veins (DVT) and pulmonary arteries (PE), placement and removal of IVC filters, injection of contrast into arteries/veins to assess for narrowing/stenosis (followed by treatment with balloon angioplasty/stent), closure of varicose veins with laser and/or sclerotherapy, and embolization (i.e. intentional blockage) of bleeding vessels that occur in a variety of traumatic and non-traumatic settings.
Biopsy
Biopsy procedures use image-guided, minimally invasive tissue sampling to obtain cells to accurately diagnose unknown masses in order to determine the best treatment options.
Gastrointestinal and Biliary Intervention
Procedures include drain placement into dilated obstructed bile ducts, dilatation and stent placement for benign or malignant strictures, placement/exchange of gastrostomy tubes to supplement feeding, gallbladder drainage for infection in patients who cannot undergo surgery, angiography/stenting for mesenteric artery stenosis, and embolization for active gastrointestinal bleeding.
Genitourinary Intervention
Various procedures may include drain placement into a kidney or the bladder to relieve blockage, provide access for surgical kidney stone removal, tumor ablation of a kidney mass using heat or cold, embolization to shrink symptomatic uterine fibroids, or embolization of painful scrotal varicoceles or dilated pelvic veins.
